Chennai Super Kings produced the most comprehensive away win of IPL 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday night, thrashing Mumbai Indians by 103 runs โ inflicting on the five-time champions their biggest defeat by runs in IPL history.
๐ Match 33, Wankhede Stadium ยท April 23, 2026
Chennai Super Kings 207/6 (20 ov) beat Mumbai Indians 104 all out (19 ov) by 103 runs.
Player of the Match: Sanju Samson (101* off 54)
SAMSON'S SECOND CENTURY OF IPL 2026
Batting first after Hardik Pandya won the toss and chose to bowl, CSK lost captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (22) early to Allah Ghazanfar in the third over. But Sanju Samson, playing in his first IPL El Clasico for CSK, took complete control of proceedings.
Samson's innings was a masterclass in pacing. He brought up his second fifty of IPL 2026 in just 26 balls, then absorbed pressure through a mid-innings wobble when Ghazanfar (2/25) removed Dewald Brevis and Shivam Dube in quick succession to reduce CSK to 122/4. A partnership of 43 with Kartik Sharma (18) gave him the platform. Then, in the slog overs, Samson went berserk โ smashing 31 runs off the 20th over from Krish Bhagat, including three sixes and three fours, to bring up his 101 not out off 54 balls (10 fours, 6 sixes).
It was Samson's second century of the season for CSK in just his seventh innings for the franchise โ no batter has ever scored more centuries for Chennai Super Kings faster. Bumrah, Hardik and Suryakumar Yadav all came over to congratulate him. In his own dressing room, head coach Stephen Fleming pulled him into a bear hug.
HOSEIN'S IMPACT PLAYER MASTERCLASS
The MI chase was over before it began. Introduced as the Impact Player, left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein produced a sensational opening spell โ dismissing Danish Malewar for a golden duck and Naman Dhir in quick succession. By the end of the third over, MI were 11/3.
AKEAL HOSEIN'S MATCH-WINNING SPELL
| Overs | Runs | Wickets | Economy |

Mukesh Choudhary โ playing days after his mother's passing โ dismissed Quinton de Kock in an emotional moment. Noor Ahmad picked up two wickets in two balls. Only Tilak Varma (37) and Suryakumar Yadav (36 off 30) offered any resistance in a 73-run fourth-wicket stand before Hosein struck again. MI were bowled out for 104 in 19 overs.
HISTORIC MARGINS
The 103-run margin represents:
- MI's biggest defeat by runs in their IPL history (previous worst: 90 runs vs CSK, 2023)
- CSK's largest margin of victory by runs in IPL history (previous best: 97 runs vs PBKS)
- The first time MI have lost three consecutive home games at Wankhede in a single season
- The first-ever MI vs CSK match without either Rohit Sharma or MS Dhoni in the playing XI
WHAT IT MEANS FOR THE POINTS TABLE
The win propels CSK to 5th place on 6 points from 7 matches (3 wins, 4 losses, NRR +0.118) โ their first positive NRR of the season. Mumbai Indians slide to 8th with only 2 wins in 7 matches (NRR -0.736), a deeply disappointing campaign for the five-time champions.
At the top, Punjab Kings remain the only unbeaten team in IPL 2026 with 11 points from 6 matches and a healthy +1.420 NRR. Rajasthan Royals (10 pts) are second, with RCB and SRH tied on 8 points.
ORANGE CAP & PURPLE CAP UPDATE
Samson's century moved him into the Orange Cap top three with 293 runs at a strike rate of 178. He still trails SRH's Abhishek Sharma (323 runs, SR 215.33) and Heinrich Klaasen (320). Meanwhile, Anshul Kamboj reclaims the Purple Cap โ the CSK fast bowler now leads with 14 wickets in 7 matches, ahead of LSG's Prince Yadav (13) and SRH's Eshan Malinga (12).
CAPTAINS REACT
Sanju Samson (Player of the Match): "Really feels great to score a century at Wankhede against MI. Definitely a special moment for me and the team. I am trying to keep things simple. Today the wicket wasn't a normal Wankhede wicket."
Mahela Jayawardene (MI head coach): "We lost that rhythm in the powerplays." MI's 29/3 in the powerplay was their lowest powerplay score against CSK in IPL history.
WHAT'S NEXT
CSK now travel to take on RCB in Bengaluru in a crucial Week 6 fixture. Mumbai Indians face a must-win game against Gujarat Titans at Wankhede to keep their playoff hopes breathing. With 41 matches to go in the league stage, there's still time โ but the margin for error for both 5-time champions is now razor-thin.
